The Non-Uniform States of America

Is it so bad that our nation is divided?

Don’t get me wrong, it breaks my heart when people fail to show civility and respect to their neighbors with whom they disagree. The contrasting sides are not equally valid on every issue. Hate threatens to break us apart, and I wish with all my being it was gone from our society.

But there’s something to be said about the fact that we are not all uniform. The really scary thing is having no room for dissent, and America is nowhere close to that; if anything, we dissent with one another too often and too deeply and too loudly.

I’m not sure it’s such a bad thing that presidential elections are decided so narrowly, and that every 4 or 8 years a person with a contrasting ideology from the last person is elected into office.

In Orwell’s 1984, Winston, the main character, must maintain perfect control even over his facial expressions lest he indicate the slightest lack of enthusiasm about the ideals Big Brother. The fact that America is light years away from such totalitarianism is something that should make us proud.
